Are you on quarantine or have to stay at home? Is it because of COVID-19? Do you need something to take your anger about this out on (or something to praise for helping with global warming and pollution issues)? Then this is the pattern for you!*
It’s a VIRUS! You can knit this with any weight of yarn as it’s meant to use the yarn you have so that you don’t have to leave the house.
I knit it using Red Heart Super Saver in red, grey and yellow because I have a lot of that. My grandma doesn’t seem to understand that I like nice wool yarns despite the fact that I always knit with them and talk about them.
It is knit flat then cinched to make a sphere. Then we add the little weird arm things in a different colour and some bobbles in another and voila! We have a virus!
This pattern is super simple for beginners!
Please don’t get angry at me or take this too seriously. It’s a real pattern but meant to be in a joking manner. Please knit this with already owned yarn or if you can get delivery, do that.
For a printable version, please visit the Ravelry page for this pattern.
*I honestly meant this to be a couple of dollars but I didn’t want to put in tax information. So if you knit this, please donate a few dollars to help with coronavirus or bring it with you and donate some blood. The Red Cross is in desperate need and I can assure you that they are really good there, you can barely feel it. If you are uncomfortable with this, don’t feel like you have to. If you want to donate blood but get a little anxious, you can bring your virus along to help ease anxiety.
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn in grey, red and yellow
Size 7 needles
Size 5 dpns
Tapestry needle
Stuffing
If making a face you will also need:
Embroidery needle
Embroidery floss in black
Buttons or stuffy eyes (you could also just embroider the eyes)
Instructions:
First we knit the Sphere:
CO 8 stitches in grey
Thread cast on tail through yarn needle and thread through all stitches. This will allow you to cinch the end of the ball.
Row 1 (RS): kfb all stitches
Row 2 and all WS/even rows: sl1p, purl all stitches
Row 3: sl1p, kfb, *k1, kfb*
Row 5: sl1p, k1, kfb, *k2, kfb*
Row 7: sl1p, knit all stitches
Rows 8-16: repeat rows 2 & 7
Row 17: sl1p, k1, k2tog *k2, k2tog*
Row 19: sl1p, k2tog *k1, k2tog*
Row 21: k2tog
Then we knit a bunch of tiny i-cords:
CO 3 stitches in red on dpns
K one row P the next using the i-cord method until you feel it is long enough
CO 4 more stitches and k1 row p1 row
BO and make a bunch more
Then we assemble:
Finish by cutting yarn about 10” long. Thread tail through yarn needle and then thread through all 8 stitches like you did at the beginning. Attach the little i-cords all over, make sure to leave a few out though so that we can cover the seam. If you are making a face, we will put it on after, just leave some space without the i-cords or bobbles. For the bobbles, thread yarn through stitches and tie knots to make tiny balls, then clip the excess. Now start to cinch up the ball and gradually add stuffing then fully seam up the opening when you have enough stuffing. Tie your ends together in a tight knot. Push your needle through the ball at a slant so it comes out the side. Pull yarn through snugly and clip excess. Use the few extra i-cords to hide this. If you are putting on a face, do this now, if you aren’t, you’re done!!!
I hope you enjoyed this pattern. Please donate blood or money to The Red Cross or an organization that is helping with the COVID-19 pandemic!
